Are you a new PIO? You need this introductory course before you answer the next media phone call.

fbpicI spent 15 years as a radio news reporter and left broadcasting to become the first civilian PIO for a metropolitan police department. My skills as a reporter translated well to being a good PIO – solid writing and comprehension, good judgment about what is newsworthy, and an ability to work on a deadline.

But the learning curve on the other side of the camera was a little steep. Thankfully, the sergeant who preceded me was a great officer and an excellent PIO, and he shared many of the lessons he had learned along the way.

Things have changed since then. I’ve been in public affairs now for more than 20 years. I’ve worked as a reservist with FEMA in External Affairs, and as a contract worker for a risk communication group, in addition to my current position as a Communications Director for a criminal justice agency.

I know this course would have helped me in those early days. I hope it is helpful for you.
